NSP
- A brief Introduction
The Nationwide Scholarship Program (NSP) is
the most far reaching and ambitious program launched by the Society
of Ex-Budhanilkantha Students (SEBS). The NSP utilizes the network
of its members to raise and allocate funds for the education of
bright but needy high school students in Nepal.
The Social Service Club of
Budhanilkantha School
launched NSP in 1991. In order to increase the reach
of the program it was transferred to SEBS in 1993. SEBS annual general
meeting recognized NSP as an integral part of the organization in
September 1994. The members expressed a long-term commitment to
the program. NSP was included in the SEBS Charter thereafter.
Since its inception in 1991 NSP has sponsored 678 school students
from 69 districts in Nepal. 349 of the sponsored students have graduated
from high school of which 15 completed more educational levels than
otherwise, 274 are currently being sponsored and 54 have dropped-out.
One NSP graduate, Shakuntala Majhi, completed her higher education
from Padma Kanya College in Kathmandu with NSP support. Another
NSP graduate, Sridhar Adhikari has completed his 12th year of education
at Mahendra Multiple College. These students are a small sample
of the many who have benefited from the NSP.
How does it function?
NSP operates from the SEBS office in Kathmandu, Nepal. It has an autonomous Working Committee which is its apex decision-making body. The working committee consists of a Chairperson, a National Coordinator, an International Coordinator, and a Secretary. The Working Committee has tenure of three years and is elected by the SEBS Annual General Meeting.
This committee oversees all policy aspects of the program while district coordinators implement its core activities.
NSP-NA
SEBS members residing in various parts of the world represent NSP in their localities. Nationwide Scholarship Program- North America (NSP-NA), an autonomous body of NSP, officially represents NSP in North America. Its Working Committee helps NSP formulate and implement plans and policies. It is also actively involved in fundraising and coordinating with international representatives.
All NSP working committee members and the district coordinators are volunteers and receive no financial compensation for their work.
